US Jewish group petitions for settlers
By Janine Jacharia
WASHINGTON - A group called "Brit Tzedek/The Jewish Alliance for Justice
and Peace" said Tuesday it had gathered 10,000 signatures of American
Jews on a petition urging Israel and the US to provide funding to settlers
who voluntarily relocate from the West Bank to Israel proper. Representatives
of the group plan to present the petition to US President George W. Bush
and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Wednesday, when the leaders meet to discuss
Sharon's plan for unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
The group urged
the US not to offer unqualified support for Israel's security fence, saying
it would "undermine future negotiations."
