Letter to the Editor

The Winchester Star

August 12, 2007

To the Editor,

As reflected in the Star's frequent feature articles about Winchester residents who work for positive change locally, nationally, and internationally, we in Winchester strive to make the world a better place. I share this aspiration and so I write to express support for Senators Kennedy and Kerry's co-sponsorship of the Feinstein-Lugar resolution, the first pro-Israel, pro-peace resolution likely to pass the Senate in years, and which by last week had 36 cosponsors -- over one-third of the Senate.

This resolution affirms the Senate's commitment to a "true and lasting" two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and calls on President Bush to make a "top priority" the use of "robust" diplomatic efforts to engage both sides in restarting negotiations. The Feinstein-Lugar resolution is expected to pass by unanimous consent when the Senate reconvenes this fall. I am proud that Massachusetts is among the eight states in the nation where both Senators have endorsed this resolution, introduced to mark the 40th anniversary of the Six Day War and speaking to the hope shared by the vast majority of American Jews that the next chapter in the region's history will be marked by peace and security for Israelis
and Palestinians alike.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Alpert
