Brit Tzedek v'ShalomJewish Alliance for Justice and PeaceLetter to the Editor: Textbooks Only a Symptom
Jewish Advocate March 16, 2007
As an American jewish organization dedicated to Israel's well-being and security, Brit Tzedek recently appealed to Senator Hillary Clinton by letter to use her influence in Congress tin support of Israel's best interests. The letter to Senator Clinton focused on the need to view the Israeli-Palestinian conflict comprehensively and draw on multiple sources of information in making judgments abouta complex situation. In addressing the matter of the textbooks, the letter clearly stated taht Brit Tzedek "deplores the use of any textbooks with political, national, religious or other kinds of bias" - as a pro-Israel, pro-peace organization, we strongly oppose the use of any educational materiasl which damage the prosepcts for peace and support hatred for another people. In addition, we pointed out that the textbooks are a symptom of the problem that can only be resolved by addressing the underlying political conflict between the two people, and encouraged Senator Clinton to focus her attention on constructive moving in this latter direction. Brit Tzedek is resolute in its commitment to Israel, working tirelessly for a resolution of the conflict that will end the fear and suffering of Israelis and Palestinians alike. A negotiated, two-state settlement will lead to understanding between the two peoples in education, as well as every other area. And only such a settlement will bring Israel the lasting peace and security her people so richly deserve. We invite all of you to join us in helping to make this a reality.
