Executive Director

Brit Tzedek v'Shalom seeks a visionary professional for the position of Executive Director to provide leadership for our organization. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors. She or he will have political campaign and/or issue advocacy experience; a good track record in fundraising; proven program and organizational development skills; and strong personnel and financial management experience.

The successful candidate should have excellent writing, strategic planning, and interpersonal, supervisory and political/campaign skills. Background should include significant non-profit administration and fundraising. Strong preference will be given to a candidate with a strong expertise either in working within the American Jewish community or in working on issues related to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. This position is based in Washington, DC or Chicago, IL.

The Organization

Brit Tzedek v'Shalom is America's largest grassroots Jewish peace organization, composed of American Jews deeply committed to Israel's well-being through the achievement of a negotiated settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. American Jews who share this perspective are coming to realize that their silence may be understood as approval for policies that have not been to the best interests of Israel's peace and well-being. That's why in our first six years, Brit Tzedek has grown to a network of over 40,000 supporters in 38 chapters, with offices in Chicago, and Washington, DC. We, like the overwhelming majority of Israelis and American Jews, believe that a safe and secure state of Israel necessitates that there also be an economically-viable Palestinian state standing by its side. Only then can a brighter future begin.

Our work includes advocating to Congress and the White House for policies that promote peace, organizing Jews at the grassroots level, drawing tens of thousands of Jews across the country to speaking tours and conferences, organizing a religious voice for peace through our network of over 1,000 rabbis and cantors, building a progressive coalition within the Jewish community and promoting communal dialogue.

The Brit Tzedek v'Shalom Board of Directors currently includes prominent rabbis from Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements, and also many of Brit Tzedek's most accomplished chapter leaders.

Responsibilities of the Executive Director:

  1. Organizational Vision: The Executive Director will provide leadership for short and long-term organizational vision and development.

  2. Campaigns and Advocacy: Create and implement a plan to win on our issue, develop strategies for gaining political support for our agenda through coalition-building, grassroots organizing and advocacy, media publicity, endorsements and message development.

  3. Resource and Revenue Development: Primary responsibility for ensuring that medium and long-term revenue goals are met. The Executive Director will be responsible for stewarding relationships with existing funders while coordinating the research and outreach to potential new funders by staff and members of the board. The Executive Director will devote approximately 60% of his or her time to this responsibility.

  4. Media outreach: Serve as one of our key public spokespersons for the organization through media events, press releases, writing op-eds and other PR tactics. Build increased name recognition and support for our ‘brand’.

  5. Staff recruitment and management: Oversee the organization’s staff including planning, training, staff meetings and retreats; recruit, train and develop new staff.

  6. Board Relations: Serve as primary liaison with the Board of Directors, serve or assign staff to work with Board committees, support the work of Board committees as needed and assist the Board in fulfilling its fundraising mandates.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors conducts evaluation of the Executive Director at the end of the first six months of employment and at least annually thereafter. The Executive Director will also supervise a team of 6 people based in our Chicago and Washington DC offices.

Qualifications:

The Executive Director Search Committee will prefer candidates with experience and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Proven ability to articulate and execute a program vision and a growth strategy;

  • National political campaign or issue advocacy experience;

  • A demonstrated proficiency in spearheading and leading fundraising campaigns and a demonstrated ability to leverage capital for both operations and campaigns;

  • Successfully demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to lead, stimulate, inspire and coach professionals;

  • A demonstrated knowledge, insight and commitment to issues related to Israeli/Palestinian peace;

  • A strong background in working inside the American Jewish community or inside Congress or the Executive Branch;

  • An effective advocate and spokesperson who understands how to influence decision makers;

  • Excellent networking and positioning skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with networks and coalitions, preferably with experience at the national level;

  • Able to effectively delegate;

  • Strong oral and written communication skills;

  • Demonstrated financial and administration skills;

  • Minimum five (5) years successful management experience.

This position is based in Washington, DC or Chicago, IL
